Papua New Guinea

I leave in 17 days and I am super excited despite not knowing what to expect. From any and everyone I have talked to that has been there before, this trip is life changing. Everyone came back with a slightly changed perspective and each one had uniquely diffferent experiences...but, no one seemed capable to put into words exactly how magnificent it was. They left it at: "You just need to go and see for yourself. It is something that you have to experience to appreciate and the memories you make can only be understood by the friends you go with. It is impossible to come back with the same outlook on life as before you left. "

About Papua New Guinea:

Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half of the rugged tropical island of New Guinea(which it shares with the Indonesian territory of Irian Jaya) as well as numerous smaller islands and atolls in the Pacific. The central part of the island rises into a wide ridge of mountains known as the
highlands a territory that is so densely forested and topographically forbidding that the island's local peoples remained isolated from each other for millennia. The coastline is liberally endowed with spectacular coral reefs, giving the country an international reputation for scuba diving. The smaller island groupds of Papua New Guinea include the Bismarck Archipelago, New Britain, New Ireland and the North Solomons. Some of these islands are volcanic, with dramatic mountain ranges, and all are relatively undeveloped.

PnG beach
...and you know how I love my beaches! !!
Nearly 85 percent of the main island is carpeted with tropical rain forest, containing vegetation that is a combination of Asian and Australian species. The country is also home to an impressive variety of exotic birds, including virtually all of the known species of birds of paradise, and it is blessed with more kinds of orchids than any other country.

Papua New Guinea's climate is tropical, as one would expect in a country located just south of the Equator. December to March is the wet season, although occasional rain falls year-round. While Port Moresby, the capital, and other towns on the coast are quite hot in the summer months, temperatures are considerable cooler in the Highlands. July, August, and September are the best months for trekking vacations.

PnG facts:

~Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the second largest island in the world and takes up the eastern half of the island (Indonesia Irian Jaya forms the Western half).

~Over 800 dialects are spoken in PNG, and there are over 600 off- shore islands and atolls. PNG became an independent nation in 1975.

~Homosexuality among men is illegal

~ In 1961, Michael Rockefeller, son of billionaire (and then governor of New York) Nelson Rockefeller, was reported missing. He'd gone on an exploratory mission to Papua New Guinea/Irian Jaya, a place known and documented for its headhunting practice - and was never seen or heard of again.

~Health services are continuing to decline in rural areas of Papua New Guinea as operating costs rise. Each week, 230 young children in Papua New Guinea die from preventable diseases like malnutrition, diarrhoea and malaria.

~PNG has the highest under-5 mortality rate in the Pacific with 1 in 10 children dying before their 5th birthday. Their mothers are also vulnerable. PNG now has the second highest maternal mortality rate in the world, with 1 in 18 rural women dying during pregnancy or childbirth.

~In emergency cases, sick children and pregnant mothers in rural areas must travel hours by boat or road to the nearest health centre or East Sepikfs one hospital. Weather conditions sometimes make this impossible, and many people cannot afford to pay the medical fees.

Cannabalism:
After WWII Papua New Guinea was owned by Australia.
The Fore had no outside contact with the world until a
gold prospector, Ted Eubanks reported the first known
contact with them in 1932. By the early '50's there
were 2 Europeans living among the tribe, a Lutheran
minister and an Australian Government Patrol Officer.
In 1953, Patrol Officer McArthur made the first
official notation of the "shaking disease" among the
Fore which they called "Kuru" - a word meaning
"shivering" or "trembling" in their language

Kuru is by far the most bizarre, most studied - and at
one time - most common human prion disease. It has
been the only human TSE to assume epidemic
proportions. It was found exclusively in the
stone-aged Fore (pronounced For-ay) people in Papua
New Guinea who were infected during the ritual
cannibalism of their dead relatives. As the mourners
of the villages died of Kuru they too were eaten and
in turn the epidemic expanded. Indeed, Robert Klitzman
in his book "The Trembling Mountain - a Personal
Account of Kuru, Cannibals and Mad Cow Disease"
states: "In fact the kuru-stricken body was prized
since the meat was considered leaner."

In some villages, 90%
of the women and 2/3 of the children died of Kuru. It
has claimed 10% of the population of 35,000. If the
same statistic were to hold true for the British
population the death toll could reach an unimaginably
horrendous figure of around 6 million dead from nvCJD.
Today, almost 40 years after the banning of ritual
cannabalism in New Guinea, members of this tribe
continue to die from Kuru now at the rate of about 6-8
cases/year all over age 40 (Alpers personal
communication). So the extremely long incubation
period of Kuru could portend a huge nvCJD epidemic
years from now.
It may seem creepy but I'm really into this kind of stuff. Although, I perfer my meat to come from an animal without opposable thumbs and I would definitely prefer not to be the main course on the dinner menu, I think this stuff is sooo interesting. It's one thing to learn about it in my Anthropology lectures but it's a completely another to go out and Indiana Jones-it all on my own!! (provided I dont get thrown into a creepy snake pit and/or chased by a giant boulder)

Deadly Diseases:

I just know that I am going to contract some deadly disease while I'm over there and when I researched the risks, there is definitely not a shortage for me to choose from:

Malaria is a risk in all areas outside urban Port Moresby.
Dengue fever and other mosquito-borne diseases also occur.
The rate of HIV/AIDS infection in Papua New Guinea is high.
Food-borne, water-borne and other infectious diseases
(including tuberculosis, typhoid and hepatitis) are common.
Swimmers should also be aware that water-borne parasites pose a risk in many of PNG's rivers.
The World Health Organisation has confirmed deaths from avian influenza and outbreaks of avian influenza amongst birds in the region.

I can only hope that out of my 1,000,000,000 mosqito bites that I am already preparing myself to get, ONE of them doesnt infect me with a deadly disease. I will be on my malaria meds and slathered up with repellent....

Honestly right now, I could care less. I am SO EXCITED! The countdown has officially begun!

Cannot wait!

Right Turn = Dame Desu.

So the other night, I was taking Natasha home after our workout and coming from Higashi Sanjo station toward the 289. If you go left: my house, if you go straight: it turns into Route 403, if you turn right towards Gusto: you get a TICKET!

It’s a major FRIGGIN intersection! I saw the cop, signal down, check for traffic and GO. Then I look in my rear view mirror and he flips a bitch and turns on his siren behind me! After weighing my options of making a dash for it and trying to lose him down one of the allies or puling over, I thought pulling over would be my best bet. Natasha reminded me that this wasnt California and I was not OJ Simpson, and to get out of it by not speaking any Japanese and we were set to deal with the situation. If cops cant understand you here they usually just let you go and apologize 5 times for stopping you! (As easy as it may seem to just speak English, it's actually way tougher than you think. After living here for over 6 months now, it amazing how much of my everyday speech is peppered with Japanese words or phrases even when I AM speaking English)

Anyway, after Mr. Hot Policeman came up to my window and rattled off a whole bunch of Japanese, all of which I understood, I just stared at him blankly and said: I’m sorry I don’t speak Japanese. I don’t understand you! For which, his reply was (in PERFECT English) “You can’t turn right back there, it is a traffic violation” (not bio-ra-shon, but VioLaTion with a V and L) I had to summon up every piece of strength in me not to start cursing at my bad luck to get the only cop in the whole prefecture that spoke English!
He took my driving permit and said something else in perfect English, but I pretended not to understand him. I feel bad for that one but I had to do what I had to do. Then he throws me another curve ball by saying,
“I don’t speak good English so please follow me to the police station”

Me: I just got back from the gym and am really sweaty, I am afraid I will catch a cold if I don’t go home now and change. (I know, LAME, but it was the best I could come up with under the pressure)

Him: well, you can go home and change and then please come

Me: well also it’s really late and I teach junior high school so I have to wake up early in the morning. Can I come tomorrow with my JTE and they will translate for me? (I figured by this point that if I was going to get a ticket, I was going to do it getting a ½ day off of work and getting paid for it)

Him: what time will you come? (only in Japan do they give YOU the option of when its convenient for you)

Me: (giving up on getting out of the ticket) I don’t know because I don’t know what time I have to teach classes. What will happen? How much is the ticket going to be?

Him: 1man (100$)

Me: ( ONE hundred f—ing dollars!?!? No F—ing way! getting a ticket is NOT an option, time to play the “girl card”) then I put my head down and begin to shake b/c I cant cry but I try to -- while I was down there, I took a peek at his ring finger and he wasn’t married -- Did I mention he was HOT!??!
meanwhile Natasha adds to the drama by asking “Will she get arrested?!!?”

As soon as I started crying he knelt down to where his face was right @ my window:

GOT ‘EM!

To make a long story short I got out of my ticket! ! ! 100 big ones right back in MY pocket! VICTORY! But be careful, in Japan even if it is a MAJOR intersection, unless it says you can turn, keep going straight, chances are you will get a ticket for some unknown reason. Unknown even to the cop, besides the fact that it is “the law.” I was just surprised that in a place where the worse drivers in the world are bred and live, I was the one person pulled over!

Aint that a bitch!?!?

SAYONARA SHOGAKKO

Last Friday was the last day of my teaching Elementary School! The love/hate relationship is finally over...now I know that I was NEVER cut out to be an Kindergarden teacher or have any profession that requires any amount of patience.

On the plus side, I think that I am going to have kids afterall, the cute ones arent so bad and some of them even managed to win me over with their grubby hands, missing teeth, runny noses and stupid little white/red hats!

Gotta show love for the WESTSIDE!
Cali Represent!
my favorite class
it's seriously a wonder with all these masks, they still somehow manage to stay sick
Never thought I would EVER be a Kindergarden Teacher...
Just the thought of them calling me Ms. Hirashima makes me cringe!
OK, so if you have never whipped out a camera around Japanese kids, be careful. This is how the picture session started...calm (normal) enough, right?!?
me backing up..somehow my group of 10 tripled in a matter of seconds
complete chaos...poor little girl in the middle is getting smothered
Melissa's goal in life is to have a chubby Japanese child...the chubbier, the better, which will be hard considering she doesnt like Japanese men and she is Canadian. Dont know how she is going to manage that one..but anyways this pic is for you!!

Now, that I'm done, I think I'm actually going to miss the little $#!&s!!!! :(

P.s. Im not as bitter or angry as my last blog may portray, so dont go feeling sorry for me or think that you need to examine my wrists for cuts next time you see me, I just needed to vent and write something somewhat artistic instead of having a restraining order put against me for karate chopping some biznatch in the neck...and I am actually a really chipper/bubbly person

.....really :)

I Hate Ugly People

Tell me,
when you see a woman like me,
do you feel animosity,
hatred even jealousy?

I’m living MY life for me, but can we say the same about you? Tryna bring me down? that’s what UGLY people do. He lied to me, cried to me, confided in me, how’s that for a story? It so pathetic, what a shame! To him, it was all a game, me and you, easily interchanged …so I guess, you don’t deserve all the blame. But I finally got it, and yet you? YOU stick it through. Well, guess what… the joke is on you!! Go ahead and lay in bed with a straying, lying, defiling BOY who wouldn't even claim…He ever even knew a chick like you.

Either with me or with you, he's satisfied
compliments support his argument
thus, it's ratified
in his mind, he makes up lines
The lines he spits are full of wit
but behind the facade
hides something odd
an ugly truth, a goddamn shame
he says “don’t hate the playa, hate the game”
His ugliness is quite apparent
not in his smile, nor his style,
but if you look deep in his eyes
you’ll see all the lies.

Ugliness is not on the outside, but on the inside, in the darkest corners, it tends to hide, it sits and waits using charm as bait, praying for the next victim, unsuspecting women, who don’t even know what has yet to hit them.

Even smart girls put up an unbreakable wall
or they are sure to fall.
When he looks in their direction,
they foresee the deception
for they know better than to settle for ugly guys,
the ones who hide all their beast-like instincts inside.
So remember their wrong doings and sinister ways
never getting caught in their deceitful maze,
you're better than them and in the end,
it will be YOUR money he spends
Find a guy who wont make you cry, treat you like a Queen.
Purge yourself of those ugly kids' dreams.

They whisper sweet nothings in your ear, only loud enough for YOU to hear, but, when they disappear, you are alone, left with detest, they’re out with the next-- flavor of the week…But if it’s true love you seek, don’t believe the lies or it will lead to your demise, not of your relationship, but of your trust, once it’s gone, forever its lost.

Respect for oneself goes on top of the rest
with the ugly ones don’t even take the time to reflect
Spend NO precious time except this rhyme
For when he realizes what he had,
it will be all HIS bad,
too late to negotiate
the terms of the agreement,
its time for bereavement,
he’ll repent and take back the things he resents
but it wont ever be enough,
in life it’s just too tough,
to forgive a liar, who confused love with desire,
took my kindness for weakness, put me at the bottom of his list
of priority, he wasn't ready for a WOMAN like me
so settled for a GIRL just as ugly as HE....

No, I’m not hurt, I’m PISSED, a mile long list, of love words he used, a relationship ensued, I have to admit, he won me over, juuust a little bit. But now I see, the ugliness that is HE, he needs to be put in his place; NO ONE lies to my face.

Everything happens for a reason, for him the season
has finally expired, no apology required,
no tears will be shed,
just another lost friend,
so now I bid you adieu coupled with a: “FUCK YOU, too!”

Just a waste of my time, that’s cause me to rhyme, the bitterness gets old, though I’ve a heart of gold, my story was untold, so now, with that being said, I’ve stopped seeing red and can sleep without thoughts of HIM in my head.

Til Death Do Us Part?!?!

In a

In a SEARCH
Valentine's Day
gift to the country, scientists said they are determined to remove and preserve together the remains of a couple buried 5,000 to 6,000 years ago, their arms still wrapped around each other in an enduring embrace. Instead of removing the bones one-by-one for reassembly later, archaeologists plan to scoop up the entire section of earth where the couple was buried, they told Reuters.

The plot will then be transported for study before being put on display in an Italian museum, thereby preserving the world's longest known hug for posterity.

"We want to keep can them just as they have been all this time -- together," archaeologist Elena Menotti, who announced the discovery a week ago, told Reuters.

STAR-CROSSED LOVERS?

More importantly, it will give scientists a chance to figure out what was has become one of Italian archaeology's greatest mysteries: the first known Neolithic couple to be buried together, hugging.

Was it a sudden death? A ritual sacrifice? Or maybe they were prehistoric, star-crossed lovers who took their own lives.

That is a crowd-pleasing theory in these parts, since Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was set in nearby Verona.

But scientists acknowledge they still know precious little about the now-famous Stone Age couple, whose embrace has become a subject of world newspaper headlines and chat shows.Italians dubbed them the "Lovers of Valdaro" after the Mantova suburb of farmland and factories. But even their gender is a open question until scientists confirm the theory that they were a man and a woman. Archaeologists seem certain the couple died young, since their teeth are intact and that they died during the Stone Age because of an arrowhead and tools found with the remains.

Ain’t this a bitch! And I can’t even find a guy who I want to be wrapped around while I’m alive.

Happy freakin’ Valentines Day!

More Snowboarding and more Musical

We had a performance in Nagaoka this weekend, which now that I think about, seems like it was a week ago rather than just 2 days ago. To this date, that performance was the best! Everyone seems to be relaxing and feeling more confident in their lines, and overall the show ran pretty smoothly. Of course, there were the common line fudge-ups and the curtain rising and lowering at random times, but still entertaining to say the least. After the show ended @ 10ish, a few of us drove to Tokamachi. We went to this really cute log cabin bar where the owner dressed in a kimono and was the touchiest/drunkest Japanese lady I have ever seen.

me: trying to summon up my creative mojo
my normal face during musical rehearsals AND performances

Bright and early morning, we all got up to go snowboarding in Yuzawa, which is about another hour drive from Tokamachi. I’m FINALLY getting the hang of it! Don’t get me wrong, I definitely had my fair share of spills/summersaults/head-plants, but this time, they just seemed to be less frequent—which is ALWAYS a good thing!

Me and JenellePam and Decci

Straight from snowboarding, I came home and got ready for “Kaede’s F**in Rockin Going Away Party” where the theme was, “You don’t know me? Who Cares!” There was so many random people there. For example: This Rastafarian lookin’ guy came up to Decci and was all: “Where are you from”

Decci: Ireland, Where are you from?

Weird Man, who hadn’t showered in about a week (maybe longer): “Father’s Ballsack” and then he proceeded to vibrate and have a seizure-like outburst.

I about peed my pants laughing. This was pretty much the jist of the whole night. Gather the most eccentric (to put it politely) people in Japan in one room, play EVERYTHING from heavy metal-Elvis-Country-80’s and jump around as off beat as possible! The night was pure comedy. Then to top it off, we hit up Karaoke until the sun came up.

Early morning I caught a train back to Sanjo for Jenny’s Birthday fun-stivities. More Karaoke and Manja dinner. I just got home and I’m exhausted. It’s reassuring to know that I NEED my weeks to recuperate from my weekends still, so I’m not SO grown after all!

On a random point: Anna Nicole Smith died? WHAT!?!

What's in a Name?

So today I went to school and one of my teachers says to me: "Kristen-sensei, you watch SUPABO?" (translation: did you watch the SuperBowl?)
Me: No. I didn't have time.
Him: I like AmeriFuto (American Football)
Me: Oh yeah?
Him: Watashi no SON NAME shiteru? (Do you know my son's name)
me: (How the hell would I know your sons name?) --no what is it?
Him: Its TAKU --like Takuru (tackle)
Me: oh yeah?
him: maybe I want Kota.
Me: Why Kota?
Him: Like Kuotaru (Quarter)
Me: (in disbelief) what if you had a girl?
Him: (stated matter of factly) LANA like Rana (runner as in runningback)

I waited a few seconds for the: HA JOKE IT WAS JOKE...AMERICAN JOKE (cuz they always say that to me when I dont get it) but...when it didnt come and he just stood there looking at me with a blank look on his face...I then proceed to half way smile, giggle akwardly and thank GOD that I wasnt born into his family and have some messed up name like TOUCHDOWN, FieldGoal, or SweatyBalls or some crap like that. I guess my name isn't so bad afterall...

Chance or Choice?

Maybe it's because I have free time on my hands? Or because I am ACTUALLY achieving my worldly education that I sought out after.

Since this journey began, I have become unusually interested in the “Process.”

Trash for example, I had become so used to throwing it in a bag and it magically disappears as if into thin air, never once stopping to think about where it goes, who takes it there, or how it gets separated. BUT…now, separating it myself into my 5 pre-bought bags and disposing of it myself forces me to take notice.

Learning Japanese starts from one word and builds on one by one, the more I know, the more confused, leading to yearning for more words and thus more confusion. Is the search for knowledge more deeply the search for understanding how dumb you actually are?

Just like each meal starts by going out and finding each ingredient and taking time to prepare it. Anything I see, I find myself wondering things like, “How is this made? Who made it? And what thought did he/she have in making it? Was it by chance or choice that it came to be?”

Everything is made by somebody. If one could stop and take the time to learn to imagine, in any and every given thing, the creator’s thoughts and the “process” it might lead to a better, more compassionate self aware life.

Mid Year Seminar Shame

Jan 29-30th, 2007

Monday and Tuesday of this week, we had a mid-year seminar for all ALTs and JTEs. The seminar itself was boring, listening to some random person tell me how my international English needed to improve to be an effective teacher…blah blah blah. I thought our guest speakers were probably somebody important but Wil assured me, “If they were important, they wouldn’t be speaking to us.” Enough said. Some of the seminars were actually really interesting and it was cool to see my peers and friends in a work setting away from parties/enkis/musical/socials. Every one was dressed up looking all business like and profession-AL... I think I was half asleep because I didn’t take a single picture, which I’m regretting now because when am I going to see these people dressed like adults ever again? It’s not everyday that you see Russell in a shirt without holes in it or shoes that are actually laced up. BUT…I did take pictures of the party that night which was held at Shame as a fundraiser for Papua New Guinea. The theme was “Back to School” but I didn’t dress up. I just felt strange looking like my junior high school students and going to the bar. Not cool. But here are some of the pics from that night:

Johanna workin itme and JamesThe dancin queen pimped out in her finest school girl gearMe and Jenelleme waiting to go home --every party has its party pooper and that was MESerious business-- so hard not to smile (dont we look like badasses??!)My body looks wierd--its like: hey look, Im just ate a bowling ball!Me and Kaede--how come she looks like my pimp daddy?Oh Joey -- You're my hero!!
Me and Russell (mentioned above)

This was our BEST attempt @ looking sexy -- Its amazing how guys could ever resist us, huh PAM?!! LOL..wow
